Wi-Fi Installations

We have been installing Wi-Fi for many years and have tried and tested most devices at some stage during that period.

Many things can interfere with signal strength.

Things like metal cladding, electrical appliances as well as cabinets, mirrors, radiators and even some heat saving windows have been known to interfere with signal strength. We mainly find issues where foil lined plasterboard is installed for fire regulation purposes. Even people getting in the way of the signal can be a factor, which means making sure the AP (access point) is high enough so they won’t degrade signal strengths. DECT telephone placement is also important to interference and must be located away from AP’s and routers.

When it comes to signal penetration. You will have to bear in mind wall thickness, what may be used in different construction materials and oddly enough, the angle at which you might be located in reference to the nearest AP.

Wi-Fi Access Points

Wi-Fi installation is a dark art and you will find many different devices purporting to be the best on the market that give you the best coverage throughout your property.

There is simply no substitute for having a Wi-Fi access point (AP) near your DSL router (no closer than about 1.5mtrs) and one or two more scattered around to make sure signal penetration is at it’s optimum. Preferably with a cat5 cable connected directly or indirectly via a switch to the DSL router.
